Marketing on MySpace

For so long, I have ignored MySpace and considered it to be a place for punks and sleazy women to hang out and discuss their latest drunken weekend bash. There is plenty of that happening on MySpace, but there's much, much more.

At the writing of this article, there are over 141 Million MySpace profiles. Many of those are duplicate or abandoned. There remain, still, millions of active profiles. Members who use MySpace freely provide a great deal of information about themselves.

There is no better resource for targeted leads than in MySpace. Members who have common interests will join "groups." There are groups with thousands of members who are interested in golf, fishing, basketball, drinking coffee, collecting stamps, making candles, and just about anything imaginable.

MySpace makes it altogether too easy to create a targeted list of subscribers within your niche market. In MySpace, your subscribers are called "friends". All you do is send a request for someone to add you as a friend and wait for them to accept your request. I'm constantly amazed at how many people randomly accept friend requests as if it is a competition to have the most friends.

In a sense, your "friends" have opted in and have become your targeted list since they all share common interests with you.

All that is necessary to begin building your targeted list of friends are a few simple steps. First, open a free MySpace account and build a profile. It is best to add a few photos, some information in your "about me" section, then add a professional looking, easy to read layout.
