"Major milestones in affiliate marketing usually center around the $1,000 figure. Your first 1K month, first 1K week, first 1k day etc. Those are all definitely great achievements. But once in a while, when the planets align just right, that number can be supercharged to the $1,000 per hour level. This is an example of one of those days with 4 crazy 1k hours in a row, and what factors contributed to that flood of leads. Using Azoogle’s hourly reporting option, here are the results for the morning of Feb 14th.
So how is this even possible using only pay per click as the traffic source? Well, it has to be a "perfect storm" of factors, all equally important, and all coinciding in the perfect mix. For this example the 3 main factors were:
1. Major advance preparation
2. A major holiday.
3. Multiple offers – all dialed in.
Looking more closely at each of these:
Major preparation is the key to making money on holidays, like with any campaign on any other day. You have to be willing to put in countless hours preparing everything. This includes researching the keyword trends, choosing your offers, setting up your campaigns, building your landing pages, testing, and have everything optimized well before the holiday hits. I suggest at least a month before the holiday, everything should be running well. You should have all your A/B ad copy testing done, and be confident that everything is at peak efficiency. Finally, make sure your landing pages are on a reliable host, that's not going to crash during the crunch time. You don’t want all your hard work to go to waste when the money is really flowing in.
The holiday is the engine that drives your traffic and earnings. In this case it was Valentines Day (the mother of all online holidays), but you can design campaigns around almost any holiday. A holiday can take a normal search term and increase it by 1,000%. Take a look at the search volume trend for the term "send flowers".
You can see that traffic goes through the roof on Feb 14th for this term. Another nice spike that you could work to your advantage with this keyword would be on mother's day.
Multiple offers are really important to capture all possible traffic activity during a given holiday. In this example I used flowers, which was one of the offers I was promoting. However, in the screenshot above there were about 4 offers feeding into that. Search through all the offers on your affiliate network and see which ones might be at all related to the upcoming holiday. Again, it all goes back to your advanced preparation. If your network doesn't have a solid offer for the holiday you are trying to promote, join another network as well."
Final thoughts, I believe that the seasons like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas festival is the best time for shoppers to buy products online. You can earn big money during those seasons. Well, I am going to share you an interesting post about how to earn first $2,000 in the affiliate marketing with zero cost. You will discover and learn step-by-step guideline for your affiliate business. I believe that those steps are very interesting and useful for new affiliate marketing entrepreneurs who have limited budget and don't want to advertise the affilaite products through pay per click search engines. It is a great alternative way to earn big money with a short term.
Here are the steps:
"Step One
Pick an affiliate product to sell. This unfortunately may be one of the hardest steps and you could fail on your first try. There are so many products to choose from and so few ways to find out which ones are selling and may be the right ones for you to try to sell. I suggest signing up at ClickBank or Commission Junction. You want to make sure that the first product or products you try to sell are not Internet marketing related. Selling "how to make money online" products is almost impossible when you yourself don’t know how to do it. Leave that to the more experienced people.
You want to start out selling things to people who are less apt to understand that you are trying to sell them something so that you can get a commission. My parents, for example, would be a great target audience. They have no idea that some links are affiliate links and others are not.
My first products were the two Warcraft guides (Joana's and Brian Kopp's) which are sold through ClickBank. I might have gotten lucky that Warcraft was especially hot at that time (that’s why I chose them) and within about 2 weeks of starting I was making an average of about a sale a day. Not everyday was the same, some days I might have made 3 sales and other days none, but one a day was the average.
I then diversified a little and also started selling some health related items from Commission Junction. Those were targeted at women who I thought might be a little less likely to know about or care about what an affiliate link was.
Step Two
After you have selected a product that you would like to sell, you need a destination for your prospective buyers to go. You need a webpage of some sort. I wanted to start out for free and therefore did not want to buy a domain. I did not know how to buy a domain and if I got one would not have known what to do with it. I had heard so much about Wordpress and Blogger as being great free blogging platforms that I signed up with both of them. I must say that I did not know anything about their terms of service and I still don’t (I don’t need to anymore because I have my own domains). I have heard that some users have had their accounts terminated for having too many affiliate links on their free blogs. Just remember that if you open up a free blog you really don’t own it. Keep that in mind before you spend too much time making it look just perfect.
Step Three
I started with Wordpress so I will use them as an example. Click on the "sign up now" button which will take you to a screen that will ask you for a username, password, and email address. Pick your username and password and type in your email and click the “Next” button. It will lead you to the next page. This next page is where you will choose your blog name (domain). Pick a name that is sort of neutral. In other words, pick a name that can go with any product you may decide to sell such as "reviewsite" or "reviewweb". Don't pick a name like "JoesBlog" because that will look strange if you are promoting things on it. Finish filling out that page and press "Signup". If you have no errors and have picked a blog name that no one else has then it will take you to the final page that looks like the picture below.
Step Four
Now that you have a blog and have named it, the next step is to choose a layout for your blog. You will need to get into the "Dashboard" of your blog and click on the "Presentation" tab along the top. Once you do that you will find about 5 pages of thumbnail pictures of the different blog layouts you can choose from. I suggest choosing one that looks the simplest and the least like a "blog" that you can find. I have had success with the "Wordpress Classic" theme that is shown on the 5th page (at the time of this writing) of the blog layout choices.
Click on the theme you decide is best (you can easily change it if you decide to later) and then click the “Activate This Theme” in the upper right hand corner. Another good theme you might try is the “White As Milk” theme on the same page.
Step Five
The next thing I did was to make a landing page on my blog where the visitors would "land" and hopefully click my link to the seller's ad. For this I did a lot of copying and pasting. I went to Brian Kopp's Warcraft front sales page and copied sections of his page and then pasted it on to mine. I had to do a lot of tinkering with this as things don’t always copy/paste as you want them to. Centering things and aligning them was another challenge for me as a beginner but with a lot of trial and error I got it to look OK.
To get the page as clean as possible I had to delete everything I could find like the default post and the blogroll. I then had to click the "presentation" tab and then the "widgets" sub-tab to get to the sidebar. I then dragged the "links" widget up into the sidebar which got rid of some of the other stuff on the side of the blog. For this tutorial I have opened up a free Wordpress blog (called "reviewmeplease") and I have recreated the exact landing page I made when I first started out. It is not for the Warcraft guide but for another ClickBank product. Click HERE to see that example of the landing page I made for the "Stop Sweating and Start Living" ebook. All the affiliate links have been disabled.
This is not the best landing page you will ever see and in fact it is quite poor. However, I did it all for free and that was what I wanted. I hoped that I could get a few potential buyers to my page and they would be interested enough in learning the “Stop Sweating” secret that they would click through to the more professional seller’s page. Once there, it was up to the seller to make the sale. My job was just to get them there.
Step Six
Now I had to get targeted traffic to my site/blog/landing page(s). I used Craigslist exclusively for this. You have to make sure you post your ads in the correct sections or they will get flagged for sure. In the case of the Stop Sweating product I posted my ad under "Services Offered" and then "Beauty Services" and it looked something like this:
"Do Away With Those Underarm Sweat Problems (Title)
This book will reveal a 100% all-natural step by step
process that you can use to quickly and easily
eliminate your underarm sweat problems forever.
Please click HERE for more information."
I made 5 variations of this ad which was quite easy to do and I had each variation on an Excell spreadsheet. I would then make a post of each ad variation in five different cities. I could then change Craigslist email accounts (I had 10 of them) and make the same posts again in 5 more cities. I had to be very careful not to get too ambitious and post too much as I would then run the risk of having every ad flagged and deleted. Today, I am going to give you an interesting story provided by Rosalind Gardner from NetProfitsToday.com. She posted the interesting story what it is happened with 235 hours worked in the online business for zero dollars earned. You will discover why and how to avoid those mistakes. I strongly believe that learning from other mistakes is one of the critical steps for your success in the future.
Here is Rosalind's post on her blog:
"This morning I came across a reference to Caroline Middlebrook's "Stats & Analysis for October '07″ blog post on Darren Rowse's ProBlogger.net.
In the post, Caroline shows in great detail her blog traffic stats, new RSS subscribers, a breakdown of how she spent her time online during the month and her final earnings for the month.
After reading through her stats and thinking "Wow! Those are awesome results for a 2-month old blog", I was absolutely shocked to learn that after working 235 hours and getting 11,000 visitors to her site (without PPC) during October, only 259 folks signed up for her feed and despite all that effort, she didn’t earn one red cent.
More shocking still is the fact that Caroline left her job in late September to become a full-time Internet marketer / blogger and admits that "I slipped further into debt this month as I will every month until I am bringing in enough money to cover my living expenses." Later in the post she analyzes the areas in which her efforts were misdirected and commits to shifting gears in November.
From the perspective of someone who has been working online for almost 10 years and whose blogs and sites earn 100K+ per month, I’ve listed some suggestions below for those who are tempted to head down the same path as Caroline.
1. Monetize your site! Maybe I'm blind, but despite linking out to a number of different sites, I couldn’t find Adsense or one affiliate link on Caroline’s site.
I recommend monetizing a new site with Google Adsense until you start earning a sufficient income from your product recommendations to warrant its removal.
2. To make money, blog about what you know. Caroline writes very well and shares detailed information along with helpful advice. She is also upfront about the fact that she is 'blogging out loud' as she learns how to make money online.
So far, so good… so what's the problem?
Well, as I see it, Caroline doesn't know her audience. For example, if you had a medical problem, would you seek advice from a student who just started med school 6 weeks ago? NO!! You would go to one or more qualified doctors with experience and follow their recommendations.
Likewise, would you accept a product recommendation for an Internet marketing tool from a blogger who admits to making no money? Probably not until you confirmed its viability with more experienced online marketers whose advice you trust… and they'd earn the commission from the sale.
So, although Caroline's visitors may read her Internet business learning journal with interest, they will probably go elsewhere to buy until she demonstrates success in her pursuit.
Ultimately, when you work to your strengths and start with a topic you know well, you make money faster.
3. Less research, more writing. When point #2 above is heeded, a blogger doesn’t need to spend nearly 50% of their time researching material in order to develop content.
Here's a tip.
Before you sit down at your computer to work, pick your topic for the day and create a bullet list of the most important items you want to cover. Then, before you check your email, the latest Google Alerts or your feedreader, open up your text editor and flesh those points into an article. Only then should you open a browser to surf for more information and statistics if required… not before.
Approaching your content development in that manner will save you hours and hours (even days) of time and ultimately results in more content to monetize.
4. Write to sell. Much of your informational content should be written with a product in mind - i.e. to drive traffic to your product recommendations.
Start with the question, "What product do I want to sell today?" followed by "What problem(s) does that product solve for my readers?". Answer the question(s) in your article and link to your endorsement.
Depending on the nature of the market and my subscribers, anywhere from 20% to 50% of my articles ultimately link to a product recommendation.
5. Avoid time-wasting marketing techniques. I write copious amounts about using pay-per-click search engines and blogging to drive traffic to my (properly monetized) sites as opposed to expounding the virtues of social media marketing.
That's because I've found that compared to PPC and blogging, the latter is a huge and on-going waste of time.
I suppose if I had a free weekend, I could spend it Digging my own articles or trying to make a bunch of MySpace or Facebook 'friends' whose primary objective is to sell me something. (I especially appreciate the ads - a.k.a. 'comments' - that promise to help me 'get rich quick' or sell me 'legal bud' … NOT.)
While I do make time to comment on the occassional blog post that I find interesting, intelligent and unique, I don’t consider blog commenting a marketing technique - unlike the 2362 webmasters who tried to post comments to my blog today.
To me it makes much more sense to spend an hour building a PPC campaign that targets customers with fat wallets who want to buy dating service memberships, travel gear and the other stuff I sell on my affiliate sites, than giving free advice on other webmasters' forums (that what my blog is for) just for the sake of a few backlinks.
Furthermore, that hour invested in a PPC campaign has a long term payoff. I have campaigns and keywords that have been in place since 1999 that just keep sending my sites traffic and resulting in sales.
6. Lastly, do not quit your job… just yet! Not unless you have a rich relative who will support you until your business venture is self-sustaining.
Wait until your sites have more than replaced your current income. Although I too invested anywhere from 50 to 80 hours per week when I started my online business, I quit my job only after my sites were netting 10K per month, which was double my gross earnings as an air traffic controller.
When you quit too soon, you run the risk of making rash business decisions based on desperation and fear rather than knowledge and confidence acquired through experience.
To summarize, although a blogger's primary objective should be to inform and/or entertain his or her readers with quality information, the ultimate goal of any business is to make money. While hobby blogs or journals can be monetized to a certain extent, you have to gain your visitors’ trust if you want to make serious coin."
Final thought, I believe that following to her suggestions will help you in the great position to earn more money. I totally agree with her that you have to avoid waste-time marketing technique. You should find out which marketing techniques work well for you and your business. Once you find it, I highly recommend you to focus on those techiques.
